Mating helps preserve breed standards, reduce inherited diseases, and support the emotional well-being of both male and female Coton de Tulear.
Not every Coton de Tulear needs to be mated. Mating should only be considered when there is a genuine, responsible intent, such as contributing to the breed's health and lineage, not just because your pet is growing up.
Coton de Tulear can technically mate after hitting puberty (around 6-12 months of age). However, MMP advises mating only after 1.5 to 1.8 years of age to ensure full physical and reproductive maturity, healthier pregnancy outcomes, reduced risk of complications for both mother and puppy. Early mating is discouraged as it can negatively affect the dog’s health and well-being.
You may notice restlessness, increased affection, mounting behaviour, or vocalization during the heat cycle in females. These can be natural signs of reproductive readiness, but they do not confirm that mating is required.
Mating should only be considered if your Coton de Tulear meets breed standards, is in excellent health, and has no genetic disorders. This protects the well-being of both the parents and the puppies.
Ask yourself, why are you considering mating? Are you prepared for the responsibilities of pregnancy, whelping, and caring for puppies? Do you have a plan to find responsible homes for them?
Note: Cooler months (October to March) are generally better suited for mating, as extreme heat or humidity can cause discomfort and stress for the dogs.
