What to Feed a Mother Dog After Giving Birth

Vishakha Khandelwal December 2025

A mother dog's body goes through significant changes after the birth of her babies. The time is extremely exhausting for a new mother dog. Her body has just gone through intense labour, pain, hormonal changes, skin sensitivity, muscle fatigue, and the sudden responsibility of feeding newborn puppies round the clock.

Just like human mothers, new dog moms experience:

  • Huge calorie loss while nursing

  • Weakness and dehydration

  • Drop in immunity

  • Increased stress and anxiety

  • Constant nutrient drain because she produces milk 6-8 times a day

That's why her diet right after whelping becomes non-negotiable; the proper nutrition helps her recover faster, produce enough milk, stay energetic, and avoid health complications like calcium deficiency or mastitis.

This guide covers what to feed, how much to feed, foods to avoid, feeding schedule, home-made diet chart, and complete diet for new mother dogs in India.

What to Feed a Mother Dog After Giving Birth

Why Diet Is Critical After Delivery

After giving birth, a mother dog's nutritional needs increase by 2-3 times because:

  • She is recovering from the delivery

  • She needs to maintain her strength

  • She is producing milk for the puppies

  • Her metabolism is very high

  • Her calcium and protein levels drop quickly

A correct diet ensures:

  • Healthy milk production

  • Faster recovery

  • Healthy weight

  • Strong immunity

  • Healthy puppies

What to Feed a Mother Dog After Giving Birth

Here are the safest and most effective foods for a mother dog after delivery.

1. High-Quality Puppy Food

The best food for mother dogs after delivery.

  • High in protein

  • Rich in calcium

  • High energy

  • Easy to digest

  • Supports milk production

Feed small-breed puppy food to Small to medium-breed dogs and large-breed puppy food to large-breed dogs.

2. Protein-Rich Foods (Essential for Milk Production)

Experts at Purina explain that complete dog foods are formulated to provide all essential nutrients. MMP experts also suggest that pet parents should give protein-rich food as it helps in rebuilding the strength of a new mother and helps in lactation, ensuring the newborn receives proper nutrition.

You can add these to her meals once or twice a day:

  • Boiled eggs

  • Chicken (boneless, boiled)

  • Fish (boneless)

  • Paneer

  • Tofu

3. Calcium-Supporting Foods

Mother dogs lose a lot of calcium during the nursing period, and because of that, they feel weak and tired. You can offer:

  • Curd

  • Paneer

  • Puppy milk replacer

  • Egg shell powder (vet-approved)

Avoid giving direct calcium tablets unless prescribed by a vet.

Remember, excess calcium is also dangerous. Get expert vet help to feed your new pet mother thoughtfully.

4. Gentle Home Foods (If You Prefer Homemade)

Safe home-cooked foods you can give:

  • Chicken + Rice

  • Chicken broth

  • Boiled vegetables (pumpkin, carrots, peas)

  • Oatmeal

  • Khichdi (no spices)

These provide energy without causing stomach upset.

5. Hydration Boosters

A new mother loses fluid during the process of giving birth, and the subsequent lactation causes significant fluid loss too. A nursing mother needs 4x more water.

Offer:

  • Fresh water (24/7)

  • Chicken broth

  • Wet food mixed with kibble

  • Electrolytes (vet-approved only)

Dehydration can reduce milk supply.
