Isn’t that all we want - our Golden happy and joyful? So, how do you keep your dog healthy and happy? What are the tips? How do you make sure your Golden Retriever is living his best life?
We’ve got you! Here are the secrets to keeping your Golden Retriever healthy and happy:
BALANCED DIET
Because Your Golden Deserves A Gold- Standard Nutrition!
Golden Retrievers are energetic, medium-to-large breed dogs that need a nutritious diet. A well-balanced diet will ensure a healthy weight, a better immune system, consistent energy levels, good gut health, and improved overall vitality and mood.
Here are some points to ensure while feeding your Golden Retriever:
● Nutritious diet: Ensure your dog is fed with nutrients, proteins, fats, starch ( if he’s below 6 months of age ), superfoods, calcium, etc.
● Foods to avoid: Goldens are prone to skin allergies and gut problems. And low-quality fillers make it worse. So, skip corn, soy, artificial colouring or frozen foods. Avoid citric fruits like oranges, grapes (very harmful), raisins, chocolates, nuts, peaches, plums, raw eggs
● What you can feed: Blueberries, carrots, boiled pumpkin, banana, cranberries, watermelon and papaya ( all without skin & seeds, and limit the quantity). Clean and fresh water should be available for them 24*7
DAILY EXERCISE
Golden Retrievers are very lively dogs that need lots of exercise to keep them happy. Simple daily workouts like fetching, walking, and garden visits can enhance their physical and mental well-being. These activities can do wonders for their health and overall growth. Keeping them active means building their bone density, strengthening their joints and muscles, managing their weight, maintaining heart health, and preventing them from catching diseases
● Fetch or tug-of-war in the yard
● Hide-and-seek with treats or toys
● Obstacle courses made with household items
● Splash time in a kiddie pool
Activities To Keep Your Goldie Active
● Take them swimming ( they love water! )
● Go on a hike with them
● Take him on walks daily (not before 3 months of age)
● Let him play in parks with other dogs or kids
Socialisation Tips
Goldies are the most social breed among dogs. They attract attention from people, make friends with strangers and love to spend time outside the house. Socialising for a golden retriever is like morning coffee for us - comforting, energising and absolutely essential. Here’s what you can do to fulfil their need for socialisation:
● Puppy Playdates: Arrange regular meetups with other friendly dogs
● Visit Dog Parks: Let your dog observe and interact at their own pace
● Invite Visitors Over: Get them used to guests, kids, and different energy levels
● Walk in Different Environments: Try parks, sidewalks, lakes, and pet-friendly stores
Mental Stimulation Ideas: To Keep That Brain Working
Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise in dogs. It prevents boredom, reduces stress and anxiety, improves behaviour, and supports your dog's brain health.
● Puzzle Toys: Use treat-dispensing puzzles or KONGs stuffed with peanut butter or kibble
● Training Sessions: Teach new tricks like spin, roll over, high five, or even names of toys
● Interactive Mealtime: Make mealtime brainwork time
● “Which Hand” Game: Hide a treat in one hand and have them guess
● Teach Toy Cleanup: Goldens are intelligent enough to learn chores like picking up toys
VET VISITS AND VACCINATIONS
The old saying - “Nip it in the bud “applies here.
● Regular visits to the vet can ensure your pup is healthy, or if there are any precautions you should take against a probable disease. Consistent Vet Visits can make treatments easier if an early sign of a condition is detected. Vets will check your Retriever’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, heart, and overall condition.
● The vet will also give him Vaccinations or medicines to prevent sickness and diseases like rabies, distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, Lyme disease, etc. Vaccinations are crucial for every dog, not only for its health but also for the safety of other animals and even humans. It is required by law for public access and helps prevent later expensive treatments.
● Vets also make sure that your dog is dewormed. Deworming is a process in which puppies/ dogs are given syrups and tablets to remove any internal parasites like tapeworms, hookworms or roundworms. It’s crucial because these worms can cause serious health problems like weight loss, diarrhoea, and anaemia, especially in puppies, and some can even spread to humans.
Regular deworming helps keep your dog healthy, prevents the spread of worms to other pets and people, and is a key part of responsible pet care.
GROOMING AND HYGIENE: MAINTAINING THAT GOLDEN GLOW!
Regular grooming keeps your dog from unhealthy shedding and helps avoid skin infections, ticks or discomfort. Overall, it keeps his fur, eyes, ears and mouth fresh and clean. Not sure where to start with grooming? Mr and Mrs Pet is here to help. Our expert groomers know just how to care for your Golden’s glorious coat, eyes, ears and mouth, making grooming a relaxing and positive experience.
Skin, Fur & Coat Care
● Check regularly for rashes, hot spots, flaky skin, ticks or flea
● Bathe every 4-6 weeks (or when needed) using gentle, dog-friendly shampoo
● Use a moisturising spray or coat conditioner for dry skin
● Brush at least 2–3 times per week to remove loose fur and avoid fur all over your house
● Try to avoid haircuts. Fur protects the body from dryness and cold
Eye & Ear Care
● Wipe around the eyes with a soft cotton ball to remove discharge
● Check ears weekly for redness, wax, or odour (a sign of infection)
● Clean ears gently with a vet-approved ear cleaner, especially if your pup swims often!
● Do not put water in their ears when bathing them
Mouth Care
● Brush their teeth regularly with dog-safe toothpaste
● Offer dental chews and toys
● Add fresh coconut water to their diet
● Provide clean, fresh water daily
● Schedule regular vet and dental checkups
Grooming is more than just hygiene; it’s a chance to bond and keep an eye on your Golden’s health.
WAYS TO SHOW LOVE, CARE AND ATTENTION
At the end of the day, all our golden need is love from his hooman. Retrievers generally crave love, affection and attention from their owner. Showing them that you care builds trust and bond, supports emotional health and enhances their quality of life. The following are some ways to show your little one love, care, and attention.
● Daily Cuddle Time: Goldens are affectionate, and cuddles can be their happy place
● Talk to Them Often: Use a calm, happy tone; dogs thrive on vocal interaction
● Massage & Gentle Touch: Many dogs love back rubs and ear scratches. Great for bonding
● Make Gentle Eye Contact: Builds trust and affection (release of oxytocin!)
● Respect Their Feelings: Don’t force interactions. Read their body language and allow space when needed
● Include Them in Your Life: Take them on errands, vacations, or simply let them chill near you while you work
