Not every cat needs to be mated. Mating should only be considered when there is a genuine, responsible intent, such as contributing to the breed's health and lineage, not just because your pet is growing up.
Russian Blue cats can technically mate after hitting puberty (around 6-12 months of age). However, MMP advises mating only after 1.5 to 1.8 years of age to ensure full physical and reproductive maturity, healthier pregnancy outcomes, and reduced risk of complications for both mother and Kitten. Early mating is discouraged as it can negatively affect the cat's health and well-being.
Vocalisation, rubbing, affectionate behaviour, and tail lifting in females are typical signs of estrus, but should be evaluated by a vet before mating.
Only mate Russian Blue cats that are in excellent health, are free from genetic defects, and conform to breed standards.
Mating should only be done when you're prepared for pregnancy, delivery, and rehoming kittens responsibly.
Note: Cooler months (October to March) are generally ideal for cat mating as Russian Blue cats are more comfortable and less stressed in a mild climate.
