The New Delhi government has established its first 24-hour veterinary hospital by expanding an existing facility near St. Stephen's Hospital and Tis Hazari Courts.
The facility, which includes vaccination, an operating theatre, outpatient clinics, and a dressing room, was inaugurated on January 16 by Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai. The hospital will concentrate on issues such as monkey birth control, stray dog sterilisation, and cow sheltering.
According to Development Minister Gopal Rai, the animal husbandry department has converted the facility into a 24x7 hospital on a trial basis. "We didn't have a single hospital for animals in Delhi that operated at night, forcing people to wait even if the animal was seriously wounded or unwell. "We're currently running a pilot, but it'll be a permanent facility soon," Rai said.
According to hospital officials, doctors are available in three shifts. The hospital will be open in three shifts: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. SThis hospital, which spans thousands of square metres, has a dedicated staff to properly conduct a full terminal clean around all areas. At the moment, the hospital treats 120-125 animals per day. The figure is expected to rise during the summer.
The hospital, which offers diagnostic and surgical services, has also established a helpline number (011-239-67555) and posted its location on Google Maps so that people can find it quickly. According to an official, the number of animals coming for treatment has increased by nearly 50%, from an average of 80 per day to 120-130 per day since the hospital opened around the clock.
Pet owners will have to transport their pets home for post-operative care. "The government should also upgrade the remaining 76 hospitals, some of which lack basic amenities, according to activist Gauri Maulekhi. More needs to be done to improve animal medical facilities. "It's a brilliant step, but it still lacks an inpatient facility."
The department of animal husbandry has been tasked with developing a proposal to modernise other hospitals. "We will soon send our request for additional doctors and paramedics to the services department for recruitment," said the minister.
