What Is Deworming in Pets and Why Is It Important?

Asmi Agarwal July 2025

Has your pet been losing weight, eating less, or scratching more than usual for no apparent reason? It could be more than a bad day. These symptoms might indicate internal parasites or a more serious condition. Many cats and dogs have worms like tapeworms, hookworms, or roundworms without initially showing obvious symptoms. These parasites quietly grow inside their bodies, stealing nutrients and weakening their immune system. They can eventually lead to serious health issues for your family as well as your pet. This is why deworming is so important. It's an easy,  routine step that can protect your pet from dangers and keep them happy, active, and healthy.

What Is Deworming in Pets?

Deworming is the process of giving special medicines to pets to remove worms from their bodies. These worms, often referred to as internal parasites, typically reside in the intestines or stomach and devour the food your pet consumes. This may eventually make your pet ill, weak, or underweight. Deworming treatment helps kill and remove these worms, allowing your dog or cat to stay healthy and active. It is a simple but very important part of routine pet care.

Pets can get worms in many ways. They might eat or lick infected soil, come into contact with infected animal poop, drink dirty water, or even get worms through their mother's milk when they are puppies or kittens. Fleas can also carry worm eggs and pass them to your pet. Some of the most common worms found in pets include roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Regular deworming helps prevent these parasites from causing serious problems like diarrhoea, weight loss, dull coat, or a swollen belly, especially in young animals.

What Is Deworming in Pets and Why Is It Important?

Why is Deworming important for your pet?

Many pet parents ask us why deworming is essential. It's simple: your need to get your pet dewormed as deworming helps keep both you and your pet disease- and worm-free.

1.  Worms steal nutrients from your pet

Deworming is important as worms like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms live in your pet's intestines and absorb the food your pet eats. This means your pet doesn't get the nutrition they need, even if they're eating well. Eventually, this can lead to weakness, chronic fatigue, and compromised immunity, making them more susceptible to other infections.

2.  Worms can spread to humans

Some worm species are zoonotic, which means that humans can contract them from animals. Because they frequently play closely with pets and may not properly wash their hands, children are especially vulnerable. Parasites, such as roundworms, can cause serious health issues in people, including skin rashes, stomach problems, and even vision issues in rare cases. Deworming your pets helps reduce this risk for your whole family.

3.  It protects other pets too

If one pet in your home has worms, there's a good chance the others will catch them too, especially if they share the same living space, food, and water bowls. Infected pets also shed worm eggs in their poop, which can spread easily. Regular deworming helps break this cycle and keeps all your pets protected.

4.  Puppies and kittens need extra care

Young pets are especially sensitive to worms and deworming is very important for them because their immune systems are still developing. They can even be born with worms or get them through their mother's milk. Without early deworming, they can suffer from stunted growth, bloated bellies, or even life-threatening infections. Starting deworming on time helps them grow up strong and healthy.

5.  It supports a healthy coat and weight

One of the signs of worm infection is a dull or thinning coat. Pets may also start losing weight even if they eat well. Once dewormed, pets often show visible improvement, gaining energy, maintaining a healthy bodyweight, and their coat becomes shinier and healthier-looking.

6.  It prevents bigger health issues

Ignoring worm infections can lead to more serious problems over time. Pets may develop anaemia from blood-sucking worms, such as hookworms, or suffer from intestinal blockages caused by a heavy parasite load. These conditions can be expensive to treat and may cause long-term harm. Deworming is an affordable and straightforward step that helps prevent all this.

How worms affect your pet's health

If worms stay inside your pet for too long, they can cause many health problems. Some of the most common health risks of worms in pets are:

    Diarrhoea or vomiting

    Weight loss

    Weakness and low energy

    Bloated or painful belly

    Poor coat condition

Anaemia (especially in young puppies and kittens)

In severe cases, worms can even cause death.

The longer you wait, the worse it can get. That's why worm prevention in pets is crucial.

Signs Your Pet May Need Deworming

Worms can be confusing for pet owners. Sometimes, pets might not show any signs of having worms. However, some signs, like worms in bodily waste or near the back, constant licking and scooting, Unexpected weight loss, a swollen belly, diarrhoea or vomiting, Low energy, and dull fur, can be signs of infestation. If you notice any of these, it's a good idea to consult a veterinarian immediately and start deworming as soon as possible.

Preventing Worms (Beyond Deworming)

In addition to deworming, there are other ways to keep your pet safe from worms. A good place to start is by keeping your pet's sleeping area clean. Don't let your dog sniff or eat something that is unfamiliar while out for a walk, and always pick up your dog's poop from the yard or public areas. If you have a cat, remember to clean the litter box regularly. Use flea control products since fleas can carry worms. Always provide your pet with safe drinking water, and schedule regular checkups with the veterinarian. These simple steps can help prevent worms in pets.

What is pet deworming? It is an essential step for your pet's health, not just a routine task. Deworming your puppy or kitten helps them live a longer, healthier life.
