Does your dog love winters or would he rather cuddle up with you under a blanket? Either way, you need to be prepared to take care of him in the winters.

Many dog owners believe that because their dog has a coat of fur, they are protected from the harsh weather and can tolerate it better than us. Sure, they are covered in fur but like us, they are used to the warmth of indoors and feel cold in the weather outside.

Following are a few winter care tips to remember as you enjoy the winters with your pooch:

Know when your dog is feeling cold.

If it’s too cold for you to stay without your coat then probably your dog is feeling cold as well. Pay attention to his behavior when he is outdoors. If he is appearing uncomfortable or anxious or if he stops playing and is looking for places to burrow, then it’s time to bring him in.

Keep your dog warm and snug.

Some dog breeds are endowed with thick fur which keeps them warm in the cold weather, but the ones with thin coats need to wear a sweater or a coat. A proper winter coat should reach from the neck to the base of the tail and also protect the belly. Even if your dog is bundled up, don’t keep them out for too long in the winters. Also, make sure you never shave your dog down in winters, as a longer coat will provide more warmth.

Increase the interval between your dog’s baths. Washing too often can remove essential oils from your dog’s skin and make it dry and flaky.

Provide your dog with a cozy bed.

Provide your pooch with a warm and snug bed. Warm blankets create a cozy environment and heated pet pads can be helpful in case of a dog with aging joints. Place your dog’s bed in a place away from cold drafts, preferably where he can receive sunlight in the daytime.

Take extra care of your dog during and after walks.

Take special care during walks, and remember to wrap them up with a cozy coat and booties. Dog boots help a lot in preventing your dog’s paws from getting dry and cracked. Also despite of the cold weather, your dog needs regular walks to stay healthy. Clean his paws and dry them thoroughly after walks. Dry your dog off as soon as you get home, and make sure he has a warm cozy bed to return to.

Keep yourself and your dog safe by wearing reflective clothes, leash, collar etc. You can also attach a small light to your dog’s collar to make him more visible. Keep your dog close during walks.

Take your dog for a walk when the sun is out. If your dog does not want to go out, keep him active indoors so that his health is not affected. Never force them out, rather provide him toys and keep him busy indoors. Also if he is less active, adjust their food amount to avoid weight gain.

Moisturize

The cold weather can be harmful to your dog’s skin as well. His skin can get dry and flaky. Prevent this by adding skin and coat supplements to his food. Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that can help keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy. You can also apply coconut oil to your pet’s paws, ears or tail, if they are dry or cracking.

Special care for seniors

Winters can often worsen the existing medical conditions in your senior dog, especially arthritis. Maintain a proper exercise regimen and ensure your dog has a warm bed to rest after activity.
