Take Home a National hero - How to Adopt a Retired Army Dog?

We are all aware of the brave hearts who have spent a significant part of their lives serving the nation. We fondly remember Max, of the Mumbai Bomb Detection Squad, who sniffed out 8 kg of RDX, during the 26/11 attacks and saved hundreds of lives.

In India, Military, Paramilitary, and Police Dogs are extensively trained in tasks varying from routine patrol to explosives detection. They have the ability to follow verbal and non-verbal commands and are physically fit and sensible.

These national heroes are given an honourable retirement at the age of 8 or 9. It is because of their inability to perform required tasks with the same efficiency, or sometimes due to health reasons. They are shifted to old age homes for dogs, located in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, and Hempur, Uttarakhand

The issue at hand is that these homes have numerous dogs. Because of this every dog does not receive the amount of love and care it deserves. This can be solved by the adoption of these dogs into loving families. Adopting an army or police dog may make a civilian nervous, but don’t worry! All adoptable dogs have to pass a behavioural test to ensure that they are suitable for civilian adoptions.

But keep in mind that since they have received military training, their requirements in a home are very different. They require diet, exercise, and training differently than the regular pet dog.

So if you're looking to adopt a canine friend, this is a great opportunity to give these four-legged heroes a new life and a forever home. You will need to send an application to the Remount and Veterinary Corps Centre and School at Meerut, where around 400 retired dogs stay. You will be allowed to take a hero home, only if your application passes the screening process.
